Nobody likes going to the dentist, but most people realise that staying away can only make the problem worse.
Pauline Stoneham is a dental phobic who has stayed away for 20 years. She has cancelled appointments and even fled the waiting room, though the price is agonising toothache and over-dependence on painkillers.
The phobia was born when Mrs Stoneham was in her 20s, when a dentist's needle accidentally and painfully slipped into her lip. Anxious not to pass on the phobia to her children, she has to fight back her fears even when it's them visiting the dentist. Self-help was the first step - taking a job as a cleaner in a dental surgery. Then one of the dentists suggested hypnotherapy, and she has pinned her hopes on this. Producer Helen Thomas
