Where, on a single wild island, only five miles long can you see lions, elephants and penguins? The answer is, the Falkland Islands: 'lions' and 'elephants' are the local names for sea lions and elephant seals.
Although it was the conflict of 1982 that brought the Falklands to world attention, the animals here have always had a battle to fight - the battle for survival.
Five species of penguin, from sturdy rockhoppers to handsome kings, ponderous bull sea lions battling for mates, vast colonies of gentle albatrosses feeding chicks, crafty 'Johnny Rooks ', one of the rarest birds of prey in the world - are all dependent, in one way or another, on the vast, food-rich waters of the South Atlantic. But what if these waters are overfished, polluted by oil or heavy metals, disrupted by warfare? The new battle of the Falklands has only just begun....
