A series of personal documentaries on the contemporary world.
Trying to Make It Home by MAYA ANGELOU
Many of my ancestors caught their first glimpse of England from the decks of slaveships. So begins Maya Angelou - the American author of the highly successful I Know
Why the Caged Bird Sings on her modern journey through black Britain. Her encounters with first and second generation blacks reveal both an optimism and freshness rarely seen on television. As the journey unfolds from north to south, Maya meets streetwise kids, preachers, politicians and prisoners. At Britain's only black private school she discovers: 'the children are winners. They are proof that diamonds are a result of pressure and time. These children are gems to be proud of, the black community can be proud and Britain can be proud.'
