In the wake of the wildwood felled and burned by our ancestors, spread the new landscapes of heathland and moor. Desolate in winter and forsaken by most creatures, they come to life in summer. On sandy southern heathlands, rare smooth snakes emerge from hibernation to hunt, and gaudy sand lizards battle for a mate. Overhead the hobby swoops to pluck dragonflies and swallows from the air.
The northern moorlands are the domain of red grouse, hen harrier, peregrine falcon and the wailing red-throated diver. Here red deer now roam the open glens where forests once echoed to their roar.
