Field Marshal Lord Harding of Petherton, GCB, CBE, DSO, MC is Britain's most senior soldier after the Duke of Edinburgh.
In World War I, he served at Gallipoli and in Palestine. In World War n he led the 'Desert Rats' at El Alamein under Montgomery, and was chief of staff to Alexander in the hard-fought Italian Campaign.
Later in the 1950s he caught the headlines when he took on the demanding role of Governor of Cyprus. Yet
Harding came from yeoman Somerset stock and his first ambition was to be a farmer. In this programme, made to commemorate his 90th birthday earlier this year, Lord Harding talks with the military historian
Dr Richard Holmes and tells his remarkable life-story. Photography
