The Opening
Ceremony and Italy v Bulgaria
(Group A) Live from Mexico City
In the massive Azteca
Stadium, football's biggest festival gets under way this evening, watched by a television audience of millions throughout the world. Italy, as World Cup holders, play the opening match of the tournament, and will include the bulk of the side which won the trophy in Spain four years ago. Their first opponents in Group A are Bulgaria, who last appeared in the finals in 1974, but who finished runners-up to France only on goal difference in their qualifying group.
Coverage of the whole match is preceded by a colourful opening ceremony featuring a parade by representatives of the 24 finalists, including
England, Northern Ireland and Scotland, whose games begin early next week.
Commentary team for the match is JOHN MOTSON and JIMMY HILL , and for the ceremony BARRY DAVIES , while there's expert opinion also from BOBBY CHARLTON and TERRY VENABLES.
