A Triple Heritage
A series of nine programmes written and presented by ALJ A. MAZRUI
2: A Legacy of Lifestyles
Perhaps the most resilient institution in the whole of Africa is the extended family. 'The family is vibrant in its emotions,' says Ali Mazrui , 'compelling in its loyalties.' It's the unifying force in centralised kingdoms and scattered rural communities alike. Its codes of conduct extend to the powerful and to the lowly, to modem and traditional Africa. Polygamy is a recognised practice, acceptable to Islam but anathema to Christian missionaries. In all such families Mazrui sees the desire to have many children. They provide support in old age; they carry on the family name; they ensure immortality. Once many children died young. Now less do, thanks to Western medicine. But as Africa's population soars, Mazrui argues that there are answers other than birth control. Film editor JEFF SHAW
