The Songs of Praise Advent candle is lit this week in St Dunstan's and All Saints,
Stepney. The church lies in the cockney heartland of East London.
Geoffrey Wheeler meets some typical East Enders, including Emmy Gutberlet , who has lived in Stepney for more than 70 years, and who now cares for her mentally-handicapped son in their council flat; sees something of the work of the Missions in the area, and visits
Jeanette Roberts , who has a very special family of 27 children, all of them adopted or fostered.
Christians from all over the area have come together to join in tonight's Songs of Praise and to sing their Advent choice of hymns. Come, thou long-expected Jesus (Cross of Jesus); Let your light shine; Make me a channel of thy peace; Just as I am (Woodworth); Guide me, 0 thou great Jehovah (Cwm Rhondda); Let all mortal flesh keep silence (Picardy); Fight the good fight (Duke Street); Lo! He comes with clouds descending (Helmsley)

No bandleader in the history of popular music has created a style or sound that has retained its appeal as long as Glenn Miller 's.
In the Miller Mood evokes wartime melodies and memories and pays tribute to the musical genius of Major Glenn Miller who mysteriously disappeared
40 years ago this week on a flight from Bedford to Paris. The programme, presented from a United States Air Base in Suffolk, is presented by former Glenn Miller guest vocalist Anne Shelton and features the USAFE Ambassador's Band, who have followed faithfully the American Army/Airforce tradition for the Miller sound. Augmented by three soloists from the original orchestra of 1944: Ray McKinley (drums)
'Peanuts' Hucko (clarinet)

An Appointment with the Astrologer
A woman's husband has been missing for over a year; an actor faces a law suit which could ruin his career; a maharajah wants to purchase a new car; a rickshaw driver has a row with his child who tries to kill himself; a girl's engagement is suddenly broken off.
In times of crisis these people have one thing in common: they turn to their astrologer. Following them through the bustling alleyways of Benares in India, Everyman explores their problems and their search for a solution.
Today in the West astrology as a major influence is virtually dead, but in India most people still consult an astrologer before taking vital decisions - after
Mrs Gandhi 's assassination many Indian astrologers claimed to have predicted the event. By looking at the part astrology still plays in India today one can catch a glimpse of the crucial role it has played in civilisations throughout the world, for thousands of years.

Forgotten Constellations
Most people can recognise the major constellations such as Orion the celestial hunter, Hercules, Perseus, the Great Bear and others. But more constellations have been proposed from time to time, and there have even been attempts to make radical reforms, such as replacing the Zodiacal groups with the 12 Apostles. Patrick Moore looks back at the old star maps and tells the stories of some of the groups which have long since passed into history. Producer PIETER MORPURGO
