Songs of Praise

on BBC One London

from Tower Hamlets
The Songs of Praise Advent candle is lit this week in St Dunstan's and All Saints,
Stepney. The church lies in the cockney heartland of East London.
Geoffrey Wheeler meets some typical East Enders, including Emmy Gutberlet , who has lived in Stepney for more than 70 years, and who now cares for her mentally-handicapped son in their council flat; sees something of the work of the Missions in the area, and visits
Jeanette Roberts , who has a very special family of 27 children, all of them adopted or fostered.
Christians from all over the area have come together to join in tonight's Songs of Praise and to sing their Advent choice of hymns. Come, thou long-expected Jesus (Cross of Jesus); Let your light shine; Make me a channel of thy peace; Just as I am (Woodworth); Guide me, 0 thou great Jehovah (Cwm Rhondda); Let all mortal flesh keep silence (Picardy); Fight the good fight (Duke Street); Lo! He comes with clouds descending (Helmsley)
