A celebration of some of the golden moments in the illustrious history of this famous theatre known as 'The Royal Family's local'.
Roy Hudd , aficionado of the Variety Theatre past, present and future, reminds us of many of the 'greats' who trod these boards including Marie Lloyd , The Crazy Gang, Billy Bennett and Lupino Lane.
For some of tonight's guests it's a nostalgic occasion. Max Bygraves made the Victoria Palace his own home for four years and the never-to-be-forgotten Black and White Minstrels were in residence for no fewer than ten years - a record unequalled in musical history. During the series, television will join audiences in several of Britain's most celebrated Halls of Fame with visits to Bristol,
Sunderland, Aberdeen, Wolverhampton and Manchester.

Six love stories about six very different couples. 4: Angus and Tony
For the past 32 years, Sir Angus Wilson , the distinguished author, has shared his life with another man - Tony Garrett.
Sir Angus is 70. Tony, who is 55, once had a promising career as a probation officer. But somebody anonymously told his employers he was 'living with a well-known homosexual' and he felt obliged to resign. Such relationships were then illegal and there was the threat of prison.
'But I had no intention of leaving Angus', says Tony. He became Sir Angus's secretary, and still does the job today. They are both happy now, though Sir
Angus feels guilty about Tony's career. 'He could have been so many things-and naturally I have this feeling that I've swallowed up somebody's life'.

A series of nine programmes 8: Manic Depression
Manic depression has a dramatic effect on the lives of over 350,000 people and their relatives. Margaret has been a sufferer for three years. She describes to
Claire what it feels like, the swings of mood; the mania; the depression. She and her husband, Alan, talk about how their marriage has withstood the pressures of this mental illness.
Philip and Yvonne look back on the effects of his untreated mania, how their business collapsed and their home had to be sold. Their son, Michel, witnessed as a teenager the devastation of the disease. He is now chairman of the newly-formed Manic Depressive
Fellowship which, he hopes, will bring more support to sufferers.
