The Battle of the Atlantic In March 1943, 39 ships in four convoys were sunk by German U-boats. Losses on that scale could not be tolerated; at that time
Admiral Carl Doenitz , the Commander-in-Chief of the U-boats, came as close as he ever would to winning the Battle of the Atlantic. Had he succeeded then Britain could have been forced out of the war. That he did not do so was due in large measure to the parallel battle, fought by scientists during the war years, which was to turn almost certain defeat into victory. Presented by William WooUard
