The Battle of the Atlantic In March 1943, 39 ships in four convoys were sunk by German U-boats. Losses on that scale could not be tolerated; at that time
Admiral Carl Doenitz , the Commander-in-Chief of the U-boats, came as close as he ever would to winning the Battle of the Atlantic. Had he succeeded then Britain could have been forced out of the war.
