Taylor Morris Mishkin is in despair. His wife is ill, his daughter has left home, he has backache and no work: his God has forsaken him. Then he finds a black man in his kitchen. Shock turns to astonishment and then sceptiscism when the black man announces that he is a Jew named Levine and also an angel. Mishkin is convinced that the man is a maniac, but then his wife begins to recover.... Czech director Jan Kadar whose Shop in the High Street won an academy award, based this film on a story by Bernard Malamud.
