A young girl lay dead in a Scottish glen. She had been stabbed repeatedly. The police searched for her killer but could find no clues, no motive. Then a man called George Beattie said that he had been in the glen on the night she died. As the police questioned him he told them in detail how the crime had been committed. His story seemed to fit the facts. Beattie was charged with her murder, convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. Today, ten years later, he's still in jail. But was Beattie the attacker or did he simply talk himself into a murder charge?
Now, after a year's investigation, Rough Justice has produced new evidence revealing that Beattie had no time to commit the murder; that he had no motive; and that the girl herself died much later that night, long after Beattie had left the glen. When a baby dies at birth or in the first few days of life, all too often the memories of that baby are lost completely. He is taken from his parents before they can see him, to save them distress, buried in an unmarked grave, unnamed on a death certificate, never photographed. Worst of all, friends and family avoid talking about him. We try to protect parents by pretending the tragedy has not happened. But many parents would welcome the opportunity to see, hold and mourn their babies openly. Experts in the field believe we must change our attitude to save these parents even greater hurt. In this documentary parents and professionals talk about their own experiences, to try to break down the wall of silence surrounding the lost babies.
