'It's war!' says the chief salesman of Airbus, the planemaking group to which Britain belongs. The war is between Europe and the American giants Boeing and McDonnell Douglas to sell the next generation of airliners. Airbus is launching a new plane, the A320, to challenge American domination. But airlines are broke, and Airbus needs hundreds of millions from Mrs Thatcher's government to go ahead. Michael Cockerell investigates what one planemaker calls 'the sporty game'.
