Operation Carter was the biggest operation in the history of the regional crime squads - it was also top secret. Working with the evidence of two major 'supergrasses', provincial detectives from No 5 Regional Crime Squad were trying to crack the network of top London gangs. Eighty-four criminals became targets for the police, but to arrest any of them, the police needed more than the word of a supergrass - they wanted independent evidence.

In the first of five episodes, BBC cameras - allowed in on an RCS operation for the first time ever - follow Detective Chief Inspector Brian Ward and his men from the Reading Office as they re-investigate armed robberies of the 70s, with the help of Roger Dennhardt and Geoffrey Simms, armed robbers turned supergrass.
