with David Yip as Detective Sergeant John Ho, Derek Martin as Chief Inspector Berwick, Arthur Kelly as Det Sgt Donald Chegwyn and Maurice Denham as Edward Ruthven

On the first day of the Old Bailey trial the last thing John Ho needs is a call from his boss Berwick, let alone a couple of OAPs, a twelve-bore shotgun and a fleet of three-wheelers.

Set in 9th-century Germany, this fascinating film examines the theory that there was once a woman on the throne of St Peter - later known as Pope Joan '. The story traces the extraordinary life of a young girl who, after her father's death, is raped by his companions. Fleeing to a nearby convent she becomes their librarian, the result of her literacy and intelligence. Once again fleeing from barbarism and brutality, she adopts a boy's clothes and is later to become ' Brother John '. The rest is a strange version of ' history ' set in the hysterically superstitious Dark Ages.
