'Abide with me fast falls the eventide ' must be among the best-known words of any hymn. They were written by a Devonian, The Rev H. F. Lyte , who was curate of Brixham in 1823. The hymn is chosen for tonight's Songs of Praise by Bob Middleton , 60 years a blacksmith in Dartmouth, and sung by local choirs and congregations in St Saviour's Church.
Noreen Bray meets other local inhabitants who tell her about their work, their faith and their favourite hymns.
