For her performance Cheryl Campbell received both the BAFTA and Broadcasting Press Guild Awards for Best Actress of 1979. The serial itself received the BAFTA Award for Best Drama Serial of 1979. At the beginning Vera Brittain is 18, and lives with her prosperous parents. She is already in rebellion against provincial life and longs to go to Oxford, an ambition locally regarded as unreasonable and unfeminine.
