Wednesday is St George 's Day and although he's the patron saint of England, nowhere will his memory be celebrated with more fervour than in Alcoy, a small Spanish industrial town in the mountains behind the Costa Blanca. Every year the Alcoyanos celebrate with a most elaborate and colourful fiesta the day in 1276 when their beloved St Jordi helped them to finally expel the Moorish invaders from their city.
