' There I was, with everything privilege can bring, feeling dead inside and somehow very old in my young skin ...'
Last year a BBC team made a documentary with Jane Fonda while she was making Julia and two other American features. They filmed her family, social and political activities and obtained Jane's own account of how she came to break with her Hollywood background.
She describes her relationship with her father, her rise from the all-American ingénue to her role as an international sex queen and an Americanised version of Vadim's first wife, Brigitte Bardot. She describes how she became uncomfortable with her sex-kitten role and how she came to oppose the war in Vietnam.
The film's focus is the contradictions and controversies which she has had to resolve in her private life and in her career as an actress. It includes Henry Fonda 's own film footage of scenes from her Hollywood childhood, clips from her rare documentaries and interviews with Jon Voight and her second husband Tom Hayden.
