The island of Kura Shima is one of the Ryukyu group lying five hundred miles south of Japan. Its history is the constant struggle of its people for water.
This film was shot in 1963, when there had been drought for a year. The people fight not only thirst but the hungry crows who scavenge whatever they manage to grow in the parched earth.
