' From Sairey Gamp to
Florence Nightingale and afterwards'
Today's broadcast tells the story of the development of sick-nursing from the days of the gin-sodden Sairey Gamp and her kind to those for which Florence Nightingale worked all her life.
When Dickens introduced the notorious Mrs. Gamp into the pages of ' Martin Chuzzlewit ' with the object of drawing public attention to nursing conditions in England, such a thing as a qualified hospital nurse was practically unknown, and the sick were ministered to by women more noticeable for their slovenlv habits than their medical skill.
Florence Nightingale , however, put an end to that, and dramatic interludes will tell you the story of the ' Lady with the Lamp ', and of the days that went before her.

The return to England of Their Majesties THE KING AND QUEEN from their State Visit to North America described from Southampton Docks
On May 6 Their Majesties the King and Queen left on a momentous visit to one of their Dominions at a critical time in the Empire's history. All the deeper will be the emotion of their subjects here along the South coast when the Empress of Britain is sighted today.
Their Majesties will step ashore at about 3.20 and will proceed by car the short distance to the station whence the Royal train will depart for Waterloo.
Thomas Woodrooffe will be at the Docks to describe the Royal arrival. There will be further commentaries covering the rejoicings at. Waterloo and along the route of the State drive to Buckingham Palace.

on their return from their State Visit to North America with descriptions from Waterloo Station, and Buckingham Palace
When Londoners last saw their King and Queen driving through the streets, there was a certain sadness beneath the cheering. What Canada was to gain, they were to lose. There will be gladness alone beneath the cheering today in a great Welcome Home.
The Royal train is due at Waterloo at about 5.30, and the route to Buckingham Palace will be by way of Westminster Bridge, Parliament Square, Whitehall, and the Mall. By the clock face of Big Ben, Howard Marshall will have a commanding view of the State drive. There will be other observers at Waterloo station and outside Buckingham Palace, and effects microphones along the route.
