Some queer ideas concerning the origin of living things
KENNETH SPARROW
This afternoon's speaker, who is biology master at the Devonport High School for Boys, is going to examine some of the many quaint superstitions that have at times existed in regard to the origin of life. He will talk particularly about spontaneous generation, i.e., the emergence of life from certain substances under certain conditions, and to show how this belief, which has only quite recently been proved false, gave rise to a number of quaint conceptions.
Some claimed th t mice could be bred from wheat grains, others that sweet basil would, under the right conditions, produce scorpions. The talk, as well as instancing these and other examples, will contain some famous travellers' tales of other days.

How would the average citizen, who has heard a lot about air raids and formed conclusions as to what he would do in one of them, behave with bombs falling round him ?
This evening's programme will endeavour to answer this question by means of reconstructing a modern air raid, and showing its effects on members of a typical British family who cannot really believe that bombs will actually fail near their home. The casual unpreparedness of certain members will be contrasted with the competence of others who have a definite job to do.
As a background to the programme will be shown some of the practical defence measures that will be taken against air attack-instructions issued to gun crews, searchlight men, airmen, wardens, and so on.

Henri Sauguet's ballet La Nuit was composed in 1929, having been commissioned by C. B. Cochran for his 1930 revue. Henri Sauguet was born at Bordeaux in 1901 and studied under
Joseph Canteloube and Charles Koechlin. He was one of the founders of the ' Ecole d'Arcueil ', a group of young composers, disciples of Erik Satie. The name of the group was derived from the Parisian suburb Arcueil-Cachan where Satie lived. In 1927 Diaghilev produced his ballet La Chatte ; since then Sauguet has written other ballets, film music, a piano concerto, and an opera La Chartreuse de Parme, which was produced at the Paris Opera last March.
