2—'Human Personality '
The Rev. Malcolm Spencer ,
Honorary Secretary of the Christian
Social Council
Two years ago a series of talks was broadcast on ' Church, Community, and State'. Today the same subject is approached from another angle, and the duty of the Church towards personal and social problems will be considered. That conception of human personality which is distinctively Christian will be discussed by a noted writer on this and kindred subjects.

A Sound Picture of Fifty-Second
Street
Written by Travis Ingham
Produced by William N. Robson
This programme, prepared by the New York office of the BBC, presents in impressionistic form a picture of the New York of 1939. It takes as its theme Fifty-Second Street, which cuts across the city from East River to the Hudson, touching on its way every phase of New York life. Included in its sweep are luxurious apartment blocks and slums, smart shops and restaurants, night-clubs and docks, vividly re-created by flashes of the voices, the noises and the music of the most typical yet individual New York street scene.

An appeal on behalf of GUY'S HOSPITAL by EMILY E. P. MACMANUS , O.B.E.,
Matron of the Hospital
For the last three years the average income of Guy's Hospital from subscriptions and donations has been only E34,000 a year, and even with the income obtained from other sources, there has been a very large annual deficit.
If the hospital can obtain an additional £10,000 a year from King Edward's Hospital Fund for London, this will relieve it of considerable financial anxiety.
The hospital is also faced with the problem of rebuilding the two-hundred-year-old surgical block, the walls of which are beginning to sink. Unless the £214,000 necessary for this is raised, the surgical work of the hospital will be seriously curtailed.
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged and should be addressed to The Treasurer, [address removed]

The third of twelve episodes of Patrick Riddell's adaptation of Victor Hugo's famous novel
With music specially composed by Robert Chignell

'Fantine' in which Henry Ainley plays the part of Valjean
Baliol Holloway as Javert and the Story-Teller is Leo Genn
(by permission of Godfrey Tearle)
Play produced by John Cheatle

In the two previous instalments of the serial you have heard how Jean Valjean, liberated from the galleys after serving an unjust sentence of nineteen years, vowed vengeance on humanity and was spiritually redeemed by the saintly old Bishop of Dauphine, from whom Valjean attempted to steal a pair of silver candlesticks. Deciding to start life afresh, Valjean changes his name and becomes a benevolent employer and kindly mayor of the town of Conthil, in Lorraine. Here, to his dismay, he again meets the brutal Javert, his one-time slavemaster of the galleys, who has been appointed Conthil's Inspector of Police.

In tonight's instalment you will hear how Javert condemns to imprisonment Fantine, a girl befriended by Valjean, and how Javert's investigations into Valjean's identity take a strange turn.

The broadcast tonight will concentrate chiefly on the music. The dialogue of the play will be omitted, but the plot will be explained by a story-teller, who will link together the various musical excerpts that will be heard.
All the best-known songs in the score will be included, and Henrik Ege, who has been responsible for many adaptations, has written the narration in the idiom set down by Oscar Asche in the original book.
