Humperdinck's delightful opera Hansel and Gretel, based on Grimm's well-known story, was first produced at Weimar during Christmas, 1893, and at Daly's Theatre in London on Boxing Day, 1894.
The overture begins with the evening prayer, which is broken into by one of the witch's themes on the trumpet. Later we hear the lovely tune of Gretel's waking song and the merry dance of the children at the end of the opera.
Elgar's Op. 27 is a suite for choir and orchestra called ' From the Bavarian Highlands ', an echo of the composer's travels in that part of the world. Three of the numbers are dances scored for orchestra alone, and these are often played separately in the form of an orchestral suite. Perhaps the most charming of the three dances is the lullaby ' In Hammersbach '.

A weekly commentary on American Affairs
Raymond Gram Swing
(From America)
Raymond Swing has become known to listeners in this country as an ideal commentator on American affairs. An outstanding American journalist whose views on political developments carry weight with his own countrymen, he has also a thorough knowledge of the British viewpoint. He was once London editor of the Philadelphia Ledger and New York Evening Post, and he began broadcasting regular ' Transatlantic Bulletins' when he returned to America to become one of the editors of the New York
Nation early in 1935. Although great improvements have since been made in the conditions of transatlantic reception, broadcasts from America are still to some extent experimental. The quality of a broadcast that has come across the Atlantic and been picked up for re-transmission here cannot be expected always to equal that of a studio show.
