Mrs. Roy Devereux
In his book, 'The Present System of Road-making', which was published by order of the House of Commons, and went into nine editions, McAdam laid down in a single paragraph the principle of his system - a system which exists to this day. The McAdam road was cheap and easily made; and the word 'McAdam' soon passed into the language.
His work played as great a part as Telford's in making the Industrial Revolution possible. Yet his only reward was three grants of £2,000 each, which the House of Commons only made after exhaustive enquiry had made it clear that he had not profited in any way from the wide adoption of his method.
Mrs. Roy Devereux, who tonight is to tell the story of his life and work, is his great-great-grand-daughter, and the author of the first full-length biography of him, published last month.
A broadcast from Tower Bridge
There is a peculiarly human fascination in knowing how others are working while, with our day's work behind us, we sit over the fire, and-whether for that reason or not-Night Shift programmes like the one from Beachy Head lighthouse and the other from a lambing pen on the Wiltshire Downs were popular successes. The third
' Night Shift' may be an even greater success, for listeners are to visualise, and even hear, the great bridge being lifted , and a ship sailing through the gap towards the sea.
They will hear orders being given, bells ringing, as the ship moves slowly along ; a hail to the captain, the captain's good-bye. Something of all that goes on will be conveyed by actual sounds and by the commentary given by T. Woodrooffe.
