* South Africa: Gold-mining on the Rand '

Today listeners are to hear about the romance of gold mining on the Rand-which is the romance of Johannesburg. They will hear about this modern city which in fifty years has grown out of the bare veld of the Southern Transvaal, under the ' ridge of white waters'. They will hear of mines and towns strung on the main reef road for a hundred miles on each side of the city ; of the ' reef' as a magnet drawing people and things from all over South Africa ; of black workmen from the kraals ; of life in a mine ; and of the most up-to-date mining equipment and organisation in the world.

Tolstoy's ' War and Peace '
E. M. FORSTER
The writing of ' War and Peace ' was begun by Tolstoy in the autumn of 1863, and the Epilogue was not completed till 1869. The book won an immediate success. The whole of educated Russia acknowledged its author to be a great master.
Today Sixth Forms are to hear all about this epic of Russia from E. M. Forster , himself a brilliant man of letters. His book,' A Passage to India ', won him in 1925 two of the prizes most cherished by authors-the Prix Fetnina Vie Heureuse and the James Tait Black Prize. Mr. Forster today gives his first talk to Sixth Forms, but he is a well-known broadcaster in the evening programmes, having talked on new books, and in ' Writers of Today ' and ' Seven Days Hard ', apart from a radio talk on D. H. Lawrence.

Arthur Cranmer has distinguished himself in every branch of singing. He began his career at Huddersfield as soloist in Bantock's Omar Khayyam , and in the days of the British National Opera Company he was one of its principals, singing the title roles in Parsifal and The Barber of Seville. Mr. Cranmer has also sung at the Three Choirs Festival and has broadcast on several occasions from Hilversum, in Holland.
Samuel Dushkin, who has of late years given many recitals with Stravinsky, whose Violin Concerto was specially written for him, was born in Russia in 1898. But when only a few years old he went to live in New York He studied the violin both there and in Paris, and in 1924 he made his debut in America, playing a concerto with the New York Symphony Orchestra conducted by Walter Damrosch.

International Aspects of Health and Welfare by Dr. LUDWIK RAJCHMAN
Tonight Dr. Ludwik Rajchman , who has been Director of the Health
Section of the League of Nations since 1921, is to tell listeners what has been done, and is being done, to promote health and welfare among the peoples of the League. His department, mainly concerned with the prevention of the spread of disease, is one of the largest and most important at Geneva. Dr. Rajchman is a Polish physician who has had a brilliant international career. Before the war he was Chief Bacteriologist at the Royal Institute for Public Health in London, and during ! the war years carried out medical research at King's College, University of London. He was Director of the State Institute of Hygiene at Warsaw before going to the League of Nations to take charge of the Epidemic Commission in 1920. He has organised various activities of the League of Nations in Poland, Russia, and the Far East, and has paid a number of visits to China and Japan on behalf of the League. He is said to be one of the most brilliant people in Geneva.
