MARY JOHNSTON (soprano)
Julius Rontgen , although a Dutchman by ancestry, was born in Leipzig, where his father was leader of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, then in 1855, at the height of its fame as one of the world's foremost concert organisations. Since his twenty-second year, Rontgen lived in Amsterdam, taking a leading part in its musical life, as pianist, teacher, and conductor, and for some years as Principal of its great Conservatoire. He died two or three years ago.
Best known by his chamber music, he has composed much in the larger forms, including opera. None of his music is modern in the advanced sense of the word, although he was strongly influenced by the prevailing fashion for folk music. In his Suite of Old Dutch Dances he has collected a number of old folk tunes of the Netherlands and set them in the form of a very attractive orchestral suite.

Stories from World History
' A Citizen of Rome'
A Dramatic Interlude written by NAOMI MITCHISON
St. Paul said of himself, ' Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one ; thrice was I beaten with rods ; once was I stoned ; thrice I suffered shipwreck ; a night and a day have I been in the deep ; in journeying often ; in perils of waters; in perils of robbers ; in perils by the heathen ; in perils in the city ; in perils in the wilderness '.
Today listeners will hear about one of his adventures and about the great Roman Empire in the first century A.D. and the new Christian religion which was soon to spread all over it.

' Brain and Nerves'
R. C. GARRY , M.B., Ch.B., D.Sc.
Why do you have a brain and nerves ? What is happening in the nerves of your ears and in your brain as you listen ? And how do you make your muscles move when you speak and when you walk about ? Here is a clue from Professor Garry before he begins his talk : think of a telephone, of the telephone wires, and of the telephone exchange.

with BEN LAKE
THE SISTERS MCCARTHY and THE SWINGTETTE
On October 7, in Jack Hylton 's first broadcast since his return from America and his first in this country since September, 1935. a goodly part of his programme was swing music. He did it, as he said, to illustrate a further advance in the progress of that which we once knew as Jazz. He got hundreds of telegrams andmessages of congratulation, but also hundreds of letters from his fans. ' Give us what we know you by. Give us the sweet music you played before you went away.'
So tonight and again on Saturday
Jack Hylton , though he will play a little swing music (which he still believes is the music of the future) will make the greater part of his programme ' sweet
It is good news that he intends to start his band again as a permanent concern in the new year. Many of the fine musicians to be heard tonight and on Saturday will be in his new orchestra.
