Borodin began the composition of Prince Igor in 1869 ; when he died eighteen years later, his masterpiece was still unfinished. Several of the numbers were in a fragmentary state, and very little of the opera had been orchestrated; the Overture had not even been put on paper, though the composer had frequently played it on the piano to his friends. The completion and orchestration of prince Igor was undertaken by Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov jointly, and a legend has come into existence that Glazunov ' 'wrote out the Overture entirely from memory' of the composer's playing. This is not quite true. What Glazunov actually did was to reconstruct the Overture from the given themes ' nearly according to Borodin's plan '.

' Life in the Time of the Roman
Emperor, Constantine '
A Dramatic Interlude written by NAOMI MITCHISON
Last week listeners heard a little about St. Paul and the people who lived under a Roman Emperor about the year A.D. 60. Today's broadcast is also about people who lived under a Roman Emperor, but more than 250 years have passed, and many changes have happened Beside the badge of the Roman State we have now to put the badge of the Christian Church. And Rome, still great, was on the way to its decline and fall.
Today, in his last broadcast of the term, Professor Peacock is to talk of the hard times of winter ; of the creatures of the air and earth who have somehow to keep warm, and, all but those that hibernate, struggle to keep alive. The swallow that has flown to a warmer climate is surely to be envied, as is the animal that buries itself and lies insensate to frost and hunger until better times arrive. But what of those which have neither of these gifts ? The puffed appearance of birds on bitter mornings when the ground is like iron and when water is frozen is a pitiable sight. Wild things become tame and may be fed ; plants are resting-they have become suited to meet the adversity of the season.
