Directed by ALFRED VAN DAM from the Troxy Cinema
The story of Masaniello deals with a revolt in Naples in 1647. Masaniello is the leader of the revolution, and his hatred of the oppressors is fanned by the wrongs of his sister, Fenclla, at the hands of the Spanish Viceroy. The opera ends in tragedy for the chief characters. Masaniello goes out of his mind and is killed, and Fenella throws herself into the sea. An eruption of Vesuvius is a striking feature of the plot. Fenella, the heroine, is dumb, and the part was usually played by the chief dancer in the opera ballet, with gestures only. The opera is known abroad as The Dumb Girl of Portici. The Overture, according to tradition, is made up of tunes from the opera itself.

Conductor, IDRIS LEWIS GLYN DOWELL (tenor) The music of Mendelssohn has a close affinity in spirit to the poetry of Tennyson, and what Elisabeth Wordsworth remarked of the poet might equally well apply to the composer : ' The absence of pain and gloom through all
Tennyson's poetry is very remarkable ; he seems, as a rule, to shrink from facing the ghastly, the horrible, the eccentric, or the profoundly tragic. But he is completely in his element in a well-ordered, beautiful cultured world, a world of broad spaces of light, rich crops and stately palaces' Grieg's Lyric Suite consists of four of the Lyrical Pieces for piano which have been selected because the style of the music lends itself admirably to orchestral transcription. They were first arranged by the conductor Anton Seidl, and later re-arranged even more admirably by Grieg himself. The suite is among the most popular of Grieg's orchestral works.
