Gramophone Records by LUISA TETRAZZINI
KlRKBY LUNN
PAUL FRANZ
ANTONIO SCOTTI
Each of the four opera singers in this recorded programme appeared at Covent Garden in pre-War days. In 1895 the great Tetrazzini made her debut in Italy as Inez in L'Africaine. After singing in Rome and other Italian cities, she made a big reputation for herself in other European countries such as Spain, Portugal, and Russia, and on the other side of the Atlantic in Mexico and South America. Her Covent Garden debut was in 1907 as Violetta in LA Traviata.
Manchester was the birthplace of Kirkby Lunn, one of the finest mezzo-sopranos the world has known. From 1897 to 1899 she was a principal of the Carl Rosa Company, and until 1914 she appeared every year at Covent Garden. One of her greatest triumphs was in 1910, when she played Delilah in Saint-Saens's opera. It was in this production that Paul Franz, who also appears in this programme, was first heard at Covent Garden.
Scotti made his Covent Garden debut in 1899 in the title role of Don Giovanni. It was he who created the part of Scarpia, in Puccini's Tosca, a role that even today is generally associated with his name. Later, the Metropolitan Opera House of New York claimed his services entirely. He died early this year.
