Tennyson's poetry is very remarkable ; he seems, as a rule, to shrink from facing the ghastly, the horrible, the eccentric, or the profoundly tragic. But he is completely in his element in a well-ordered, beautiful cultured world, a world of broad spaces of light, rich crops and stately palaces' Grieg's Lyric Suite consists of four of the Lyrical Pieces for piano which have been selected because the style of the music lends itself admirably to orchestral transcription. They were first arranged by the conductor Anton Seidl, and later re-arranged even more admirably by Grieg himself. The suite is among the most popular of Grieg's orchestral works.
