Henry Croudson held two cinema appointments in Leeds before going to Manchester about nine months ago. Like so many cinema players, he started his career as a church organist. He learnt to play at St. Chad's, afterwards going to St. John's, the oldest church in Leeds. Recently, he started an accordeon.band for unemployed men, a combination that broadcast last year.

Arthur Wood conducted the original English production of Messager's
Véronique at the Apollo in 1904. Mr. Wood has many interesting reminiscences of the play itself and of its results. It was the first wave of the foreign' invasion, and its success led to the production of The Little Michus in the following year, and later to the Viennese hegemony, which began with The Merry Widow and is not over yet. It must have been an exciting first night at the Apollo in May, 1904, especially as Messager was at that time director both of Covent Garden and of the Opéra Comique, and a friend of King Edward, so Edwardian Society was present in full force.

In 1934 Ronald Frankau and Tommy Handley, who had been associated together with such success on gramophone records as 'North and South', decided to get together again. In the 'North and South' records they could only get four jokes into three minutes, and they thought they would like to have fifty. They made these records as 'Mr. Murgatroyd and Mr. Winterbotham', and brought them to Eric Maschwitz. He liked them and they first broadcast as these characters in December 1934, and have been doing so ever since.
They made a film, Mr. Murgatroyd wearing white sandals and a bowler too small for him; Mr. Winterbotham wearing a large moustache, a cap, glasses, and a sort of bookmaker's overcoat with large checks. Then they did a cabaret and have several concerts in view. As soon as Frankau has finished at the Prince of Wales Theatre, they are to tour as these famous characters.
At the moment they are seriously considering creating a Mrs. Murgatroyd and Mrs. Winterbotham, with Rene Roberts (Mrs. Frankau) and Jean Allistone (Mrs. Handley) in the parts. Frankau and Handley will write all the material.

Listeners who have heard Carroll Gibbons 's attractively lazy drawl announcing his band on the air need not be told that he is an American. He came to England in 1924. In 1928 he became Director of Light Music for a well-known gramophone company. Then for a time he went back to the States, until 1931, when he was summoned back to London to form the Savoy Hotel Orpheans.
Gibbons himself, of course, is a fine dance pianist with an individual touch and charm. His band normally consists of fourteen instrumentalists inclusive of himself; but when he broadcasts from a studio two violins are sometimes added.
