Carroll Gibbons and the Savoy Hotel Orpheans

on National Programme Daventry

View in Radio Times

(By permission of the Savoy Hotel Ltd.)
with Brian Lawrance, Anne Lenner and The Three Ginx
Introduced by James Dyrenforth

Listeners who have heard Carroll Gibbons 's attractively lazy drawl announcing his band on the air need not be told that he is an American. He came to England in 1924. In 1928 he became Director of Light Music for a well-known gramophone company. Then for a time he went back to the States, until 1931, when he was summoned back to London to form the Savoy Hotel Orpheans.

Gibbons himself, of course, is a fine dance pianist with an individual touch and charm. His band normally consists of fourteen instrumentalists inclusive of himself; but when he broadcasts from a studio two violins are sometimes added.
