Edmund Rubbra was born at Northampton in 1901. He left school at fourteen, began to work for his living as a clerk, and devoted his spare time to composing and playing the piano. Then Cyril Scott got to know of his work and gave him a lesson every fortnight. The result was that at the age of nineteen Rubbra won a scholarship at Reading University where he studied composition with Holst and piano with Howard-Jones. After a year Rubbra won a three-year scholarship for composition at the Royal College of Music. Rubbra has since toured Italy as a pianist and given recitals in Paris. Furthermore, he has distinguished himself as a composer of chamber music and songs of rare sensitiveness and individuality.

Schumann's works for pedal-piano, the Studies Op. 56, the Sketches, Op. 58, and the Fugues on the name BACH, Op. 60, all date from the year 1845 and are the result of the composer's intensive study of Bach at this period. The ' pedal-piano ' was a piano v.ith a pedalier, i.e.; a pedal-board like that of an organ, useful to organists for home practice. According to Clara Schumann's diary : ' On April 24
(1845) we hired a pedalier to attach to the piano and derived much pleasure from it. Our chief object was to practise organ playing. But Robert soon found a higher interest in this instrument and composed some sketches and studies for it which are sure to find favour as something quite new.'

The English adaptation of this play was staged in London at the Westminster and Globe Theatres. The hero is an enterprising but unemployed young man who strolls with masterly nonchalance into a bank and starts work as though he were an employee. The complications that follow make an extremely amusing comedy.
' ' Youth at the Helm' will be repeated in the Regional programme tomorrow evening at 7.15
