WILFRID SENIOR (pianoforte) Schubert's Alfonso and Estrella had no better luck than most of his operas. Written in 1822 when he was twenty-five, it had to wait till twenty-six years after his death for its first performance. The overture is full of typical Schubertian grace. Mozart's first Concerto was written while he was still the merest child, and yet the work was so difficult that no one in the family's circle of acquaintances could attempt to play it.
Mozart composed some forty-five concertos, most of which are for pianoforte. No. 23 in A opens with a ' tutti ' in which both the principal themes of the movement are announced. A plaintive Andante in six-eight time follows the first Allegro. This movement is one of the most pleasing of Mozart's slow movements. The joyous mood of the finale, a rondo, is an admirable contrast to the pensive melancholy of the second movement. Among the works Hoist composed for
St. Paul's Girls' School one of the most important is the 'St. Paul's Suite', written in 1913 and dedicated to the School Orchestra. Scored for strings alone this suite is full of beautiful music written with comparative simplicity and with a pleasing flavour of English folk song. The first number is a lively jig; the second is called ostinato, which refers to the repeated flowing figure played throughout on the second violins ; the third is an intermezzo in which there are some rich choral effects; and the fourth, finale, is founded on a dance tune the 'Dargason', and the old tune 'Greensleeves', mentioned by Shakespeare in The Merry Wives of Windsor, is also introduced.

ERNEST BARRY
Ernest Barry was one of the greatest scullers of his time. In 1903, when he was little more than twenty, he gained the much-coveted Doggett's Coat and Badge, and in 1908 he won the All-England sculling championship. Some four years later he became champion of the world. He is now rowing coach to the Danish Students' Rowing Club in Copenhagen.
In his talk this evening-his last broadcast was in October, 1934-he will devote a good deal of his time to an interesting description of the European Championships held in Berlin, commonly regarded on the Continent as a rehearsal for the forthcoming Olympic Regatta that is to be held on the same stretch of water.
