Travel Talk: Southern Europe: 2: Huertas of Valencia
Ernest Young
This afternoon Ernest Young is to talk about the 'huertas', or orchards, of Valencia - the market garden of Spain which stretches across three kinds of country. Here rice is to be found behind the sand-dunes; vegetables and Indian corn in the fields; orange groves and date groves - there is a famous date grove just outside Valencia. Ernest Young will describe how the land is watered by an irrigation system laid down by the Moors, and he will discuss an interesting feature of Valencia. The rice-growers, the maize-growers, and so forth each have a particular type of house in which they live.
