Brahms's Piano Quartet in A was written when the composer was twenty-seven. Professor Donald Tovey , in a brilliant analysis, has said that its serenity is Olympian. The first movement he describes as being of statuesque beauty with a climax that might, for passion, be mistaken for a crescendo in a Wagner opera ; the slow movement, as a masterpiece of romantic colour, involving, with the size of its themes, ' a length which it is a triumph of economy to keep within bounds'; and the finale, with its high spirits, as ' atheletic rather than Bacchanalian '. And, to the charge often made of prolixity in this last movement, he has entered a just plea : ' Terser and more aphoristic methods are for older men; an unaffected young composer is wise in learning to tell his story in full before his experience has enabled him to judge which half to omit, in order that the half may be greater than the whole.'

C. H. Middleton
Mid-January, and nothing much to do in the garden except hard work. Pigging if the weather's open ; mending things and securing things and looking over the lawn-mower if the bone's in the ground. But there are always the j catalogues to look through, and dreams to dream, and perhaps the gardener has a packet or two of corms of various kinds of lovely ranunculus to put in at the end of the month. But don't prune the roses yet, however mild the weather may be; the last week in March is early enough for that.
Mr. C. H. Middleton gives reminders for each month of the year in his book 'Mr. Middleton Talks about Gardening', and this evening he is to come to the microphone to give seasonal hints.

THE LEIPZIG SYMPHONY
ORCHESTRA
Conducted by HANS WEISBACH
Relayed from Leipzig
The Leipzig Symphony Orchestra is a body of forty-six players supported by the Leipzig Orchestral Society. It is a comparatively new organisation, for the parent Society was founded as recently as 1923 with the object of providing Leipzig with a second big orchestra. It was realised that many lovers of the best music were unable to attend the Gewandhaus Concerts of the Municipal Orchestra and the new Orchestra was formed principally for the benefit of this public. It receives financial assistance from the City Council.
The Society does not arrange concerts of its own ; it works only through existing bodies, such as the United Leipzig Concert Societies. Its Orchestra plays in the Municipal Theatres when the Municipal Orchestra is otherwise engaged, and it frequently broadcasts for the Central German Radio Company.
