2/8. Timothy Pont 's Map of Scotland (1580s/90s).
Wolves roamed the Highlands and clan rivalry made it treacherous to travel. But, when Timothy Pont graduated from St Andrew 's in 1583, he set off to survey Scotland. Over 18 years he made 77 maps, with exceptional detail and information. His maps include 350 mountains, some of which have yet to be identified. Nicholas Crane follows in his footsteps. Taken at gunpoint, the teenager was embroiled in a bizarre episode in US history. The radical kidnappers robbed banks, killed innocent people and, most famously, converted their hostage and victim Hearst, inciting perhaps the first modern media frenzy.
