It covers an area larger than Britain and France combined, yet frozen Alaska has a population smaller than Bristol.
Although a stranded stranger's chances of survival in this hostile wilderness are slim, extraordinary tales have been recorded, such as the beachcomber who crashed his plane and struggled for ten days before being found by hunters, and the photographer who documented the ordeal of passengers when their ship ran aground in 1910. Leslie Dale Martin, convicted of rape and murder in Lake Charles, Louisiana, has spent ten years awaiting execution on death row. Counsel at his trial were inexperienced and had only six weeks to prepare their evidence. As such, his defence appeared doomed from the outset.
With the execution date just weeks away, British-born human-rights lawyer Clive Stafford Smith agreed to review the case to see if there were any grounds to overturn the jury's verdict. Stafford Smith 's record was impressive - out of 300 such cases, he had lost just four in 14 years. But, as this one-off documentary shows, time was not on his side.
