To coincide with an exhibition at London's Royal Academy of Art, this film provides a rare insight into the reclusive, obsessive life of acclaimed painter Frank Auerbach.
Sealed in his Camden studio working furiously for days a year, Auerbach has links with the outside world only through his models, who include friends and family members as well as actors, film-makers and academics.
Here, he talks passionately about his densely expressionistic and highly individual art, his heroes, his compulsions and his bizarre rituals, as well as his arrival in England from Berlin as a child, alone, in 1939. Director Hannah Rothschild ; Producer Jake Auerbach (S) Anthony Trollope : Toffs and Tiaras. an Omnibus special, is showing on Tuesday at 10.35pm on BBC1
