Band of Brothers 9.00pm BBC2
There are some nightmarish and disturbing images of war in the latest episode of this excellent, adult drama series when Easy company suffers terrible casualties as they advance on the town of Foy. Two soldiers have their legs blown off as the company endures a savage bombardment from the Germans. And we are spared few of the details, so the squeamish - take note. The men are in danger of falling victim to disarray and low morale because of their ineffectual commander, Lieutenant Dike, a man who regularly disappears on solitary walks for hours on end, leaving his men at a a loss. He has problems making decisions to the point that he is frequently ridiculed behind his back. And, more seriously, Winters (Damian Lewis) can do nothing to get rid of him. "He's just another of those arrogant, rich jerks from Yale," he half-jokingly tells a colleague as they sit shivering in the snow. But life in Easy company has to go on and they have a job to do. There is an epic battle for Foy which the company eventually wins, but the cost is enormous. And there's a heavy psychological toll on one of the men as he stumbles across the ruined bodies of his comrades. (Alison Graham)
