Hughes returns home to assess his native Australia.
Money, Class and Power. This week Hughes looks beyond the middle-class idyll projected by soap operas to see whether the fundamental class divide - between convicts and settlers - still exists today. When he left 35 years ago, he felt that Australia was a contentedly middle-class country: now he feels that the influence of the early divide has produced a collective uncertainty about class.
