8.30 The Natural World Buffalo - the African Boss
Perhaps the most dangerous of Africa's large animals, buffalos can weigh up to a massive 1500lbs and are equipped with horns capable of ripping through skin and flesh with consummate ease. The king of these remarkable creatures is the Cape buffalo.
Despite this fearsome reputation, these buffalos are also among the most loyal and caring of beasts, regularly risking their lives to protect other members of their herd. They are highly sophisticated socially, with each female inheriting her status within the herd from her mother.
In Tanzania's Lake Manyara National Park, which has the highest density of wildlife in Africa, most of the animals live peacefully with the buffalos - but not the lions. Mature bulls have been known to chase adult lions, and buffalos will also attempt to kill lion cubs.
