Hazel Irvine introduces the opening day of live coverage from Royal Lytham and St Annes of the Women's British Open.

Favourite to lift the title in Lancashire is Se Ri Pak, who has already won two of the year's major tournaments - the LPGA and the US Open. Two-time US Open champion Annika Sorenstam of Sweden is the likely spearhead of the challenge to the Korean, while British interests are represented by Lisa Hackney from the Potteries and 1986 winner Laura Davies, who has run into form recently with a victory at the Chrysler Open in Gothenburg. The defending champion is Australia's Karrie Webb, who triumphed last year at Sunningdale.

The BBC Proms season continues at London's Royal Albert Hall with a live transmission - broadcast simultaneously with Radio 3 - introduced by James Naughtie.

Andrew Davis conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the television premiere of Elgar's Symphony No 3. Elgar left behind an incomplete work when he died in 1934, but composer Anthony Payne has elaborated on the sketches to produce a major symphonic work.

The evening also includes two well-loved pieces - Ravel's Mother Goose Suite, and Mozart's Piano Concerto No 17 in G, with soloist Richard Goode.

The interval film (7.55-8.15pm) documents the completion of Elgar's work and the controversy it caused.
