Nick Charles had his first drink at the age of 17. By 29 he was an alcoholic, drinking everything from boot polish to hair lacquer and sleeping rough under London's Charing Cross bridge. Here, Charles, who last year was awarded an MBE for his services to people with alcohol problems, recounts how he overcame his addiction and came to run a rehabilitation centre.

The Sadler's Wells Ballet perform a story of love and death played out on a chessboard to a score bySirArthurBliss. Recorded in 1981, the work is being shown in tribute to Dame Ninette de Valois
, who created the piece in 1937, was a founding member of the Royal Ballet and this year celebrates her 100th birthday. The leading roles are taken by David Bintley , Margaret Barbieri and David Ashmole.
