Continuing a weekend of programmes about planet Mars, marking the landing of Nasa's Pathfinder probe, which was due to take place last night.

8.30 Mars: Death or Glory?
A journey to Mars would require an extraordinary feat of human endurance and courage. The mysterious red planet is 100 million miles away from Earth, and the journey alone would take two years. So what are the chances of anyone actually surviving the physical and psychological demands of such a gruelling journey into space? See today's choices.

9.15 Fear of a Red Planet
It was probably science-fiction author HG Wells who first launched the Mars craze in 1898, with his book The War of the Worlds.
Since then, Earthlings have developed a 20th-century fascination with the red planet and its supposedly green inhabitants. Tonight's documentary travels through time on an exploration of Mars-inspired literature and cinema throughout the decades. Featured Martian movie clips include Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars, Flight to Mars, Invaders from Mars (showing at 12.15am), Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, and Mars Attacks!
A Weekend on Mars continues tomorrow with The Natural History of an Alien, at 8.55pm.
