Is it time for tax and charity laws to be radically modernised? Perri 6, research director at the think-tank Demos, believes that charities are privileged by unfair tax laws. Having previously promoted the interests of charities, he feels they are big business and are being enabled to compete unfairly with private firms. Charity shops pay a fifth of the rates they should, he argues, and are driving small traders to the wall, and big charities chasing council contracts have similar advantages.
