First in a six-part documentary series about life at sea for British sailors in the first half of this century.

For young men a life at sea promised freedom, excitement and adventure. George Field from south London, now 82 years old, went to sea as a boy to travel the world, while university dropout Adrian Seligman used a £3,000 legacy in 1936 to buy a sailing ship and journey to the South Sea islands. But other seafarers often had to make a choice between a roving life and the sweethearts and young families they left behind.
