For young men a life at sea promised freedom, excitement and adventure. George Field from south London, now 82 years old, went to sea as a boy to travel the world, while university dropout Adrian Seligman used a £3,000 legacy in 1936 to buy a sailing ship and journey to the South Sea islands.
