With the liberation of Paris in August, 1944, the war is as good as over. Germany is crumbling, but it is not defeated yet. From the east the Russians advance on the Reich, successfully reclaiming the land lost in Hitler's Barbarossa operation. The Allies, meanwhile, advance from the south and west, but supply shortages and disagreement among the Allied commanders about the best method of attack hinder their progress.
Montgomery and Eisenhower reach a critical point. The Americans plan to advance on a broad front while Montgomery wants a concentrated narrow attack and plans the Arnhem raid, which will end in disaster. Narrated by Laurence Olivier.

This week he visits Wales where he meets Welsh rock star Mike Peters and compares the recipe for a new single and a new dish. He also discovers the delights of seafood, lamb and Italian pecorino cheese - all made in Wales. In the kitchen he prepares mussels with garlic, almonds and parsley, and a chump of lamb marinated in red wine and orange.
